Where I live, we were lucky enough to have some beautiful snow over the past few week or so. Usually this is quite an exciting thing anyway, but being so starved of anything remotely fun or out of the ordinary due to the pandemic - it felt that extra bit special this year.
Like pretty much everyone else when we have a little bit of snowfall, I was straight outside trying to get some nice pictures. Although I've tried my best to stay creative during the lockdowns, I've found myself majorly neglecting my camera at points. This is mainly due to the fact I feel I have nothing new to shoot, so a bit of snow posed the perfect opportunity to get back out there.
Since I have began experimenting with film, I've found myself steering away from using my digital camera. This is for the most part because I love the authenticity, but you can't beat the practicality of DSLR (especially for someone who is still learning with film).
As well as this, I shamelessly wanted a nice winter picture of my 5 month old pup Lola for the Insta grid. Staying still is not her forte; so although she is super cute, I don't usually use film on her - as the pics will most likely turn out a golden blur.
I also have a few new lenses which I haven't really had the opportunity to test out yet. Since starting to take photography seriously, I've always been very tight on money. This meant I wasn't able to build up my gear much. For nearly a year I've been using just the kit lens that came with my camera originally.
Now, I am a great believer that you don't need the most expensive lenses, or any 'good' kit at all to get nice photographs. My kit lens has served me immensely well, and I'll most likely still use it at points - but once you're comfortable with the camera and gear you have, you want to start expanding and experiment with different equipment.
For this series of images I used my new Nikon 18-105mm (f/3.5-5.6G). I recently bought this used from one of my friends and think it's a great all rounder. You get a lot of versatility with none of the effort of having to change from lens to lens, which is ideal if you're out in the snow and want to avoid your kit getting wet.
Once I was out, I could have stayed in the confines of my garden for hours photographing - it's amazing how a little bit of white dust makes you appreciate things you wouldn't have even battered an eyelid at before!
Needless to say Lola absolutely loved it too. If I thought she was hard to get a photo of on a good day, she was near impossible to keep still with all the snow. The one good one I did manage to get though, was a super cute one :)
Big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read this far! As always you can see more of my work over on my Instagram/TikTok: @_cloevisuals for both.
Stay safe my lovelies,
